What do you do to protect the environment?
We’re serious about the environment, and work hard to minimise our impact it in three important ways:
- Reducing food waste,
- Using responsible packaging and,
- Minimising food carbon miles.
Mark and Paul started You Plate It to make cooking a delicious and healthy meal at home easy. We don't have shareholders, and we haven't taken any outside investment. This means we have the freedom to take serious and considered actions in lowering our environmental impact. We're not doing it to "look good" or for "corporate credibility", we do it because we have kids, and it's something we are genuinely passionate about.
We help reduce food waste
On average, Australians throw away 136kg of food per person per year – we actively reduce this by supplying food in the exact amounts needed. If you need one spring onion and two radish for a recipe, that is what you receive. If you need to add a table spoon of hoisin sauce to a recipe, we send the exact amount you need, which means no more accumulating half used jars of sauces.
We use innovative and sustainable food packaging
To reduce food packaging waste we use compostable packaging (much of it home compostable) and re-use our delivery boxes.
We take considered and material action to reduce carbon
Much of the food in our major supermarkets travels 1000’s of kilometres before reaching our tables, we focus on local ingredients to reduce transport and the resulting carbon output. We offset the carbon associated with delivery through carbon offset programs. We manufacture in house, to reduce shipping and minimise waste. One small, but illustrative example is our manufacturing of ice packs. We do this at our warehouse and are able to avoid the massive carbon cost of freighting icepacks from overseas or over east.
