What are you doing to make your packaing environmentally friendly?
The owners of You Plate It take our environmental obligations very seriously. We don't have shareholders, but we do have kids, and we take a number of deliberate and expensive actions to make our meal kit the most sustainable in Australia.
Our use of compostable packaging technology, and our collection scheme on boxes makes us leaders within the meal kit industry.
The packaging we use can be divided into two broad categories:
1) packaging used for food, and
2) packaging used to transport the food to your home.
We take action to minimise our environmental footprint in both these categories.
Food packaging is necessary, but it can be sustainable:
It's essential that we wrap and protect your food – both for food safety and to protect it from going bad. Almost all our food packaging is compostable and is FOGO ready (that's the kerbside green waste collection many councils do). These compostable materials are made from renewable resources and are the future of sustainable food packaging.
Where ingredients have been pre-packed by our suppliers (primarily meats and fish), we try to encourage sustainable packaging, but in most cases this is not yet available.
We don't believe that delivery packaging should be single use:
We collect and reuse all delivery packaging. The box, insulated liner, and ice packs will be collected next time we make a delivery. We will prepare it for reuse and use them again. This means the delivery box you receive will not be in "new" condition, but it doesn't need to be (it's a box).
